    Frequently Asked Questions

Secondhand or vintage: a buy or a pitfall?

Is buying secondhand really cheaper? Just like with a car, a secondhand audio product is completely sold. It's cheaper, but also consider that there's little or no warranty. Also, consider why someone is selling something. Are there any hidden defects? You might be lucky; after all, there are many trustworthy people willing to give something to others. But there are also shady dealers, scammers, or people who want to pass on their misery. Be prepared, and as MP says: If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Secondhand is a gamble. HifiStereo.nl helps you turn Marktplaats and other sites into a reliable platform for secondhand and vintage audio equipment. We assess and service equipment. Factor these costs into the purchase/sale price. This way, you and the buyer/seller can enter into an agreement that ensures both parties know exactly what to expect.

How could that work? Old equipment is essentially worthless. If something costs 10 euros, you can take the risk. But if it's vintage equipment that the seller considers valuable, it's important to be able to prove it. Equipment that works perfectly has a higher value than something that needs to be restored. By having us service it, you, as the buyer, can determine this value and know you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of the product. A guideline price of 50 euros is a good idea. You could split the costs. As a seller, you can also bring the equipment to us first. You can then demonstrate that the equipment is in good condition and ask for a higher price because we also offer a warranty.

What is "Vintage audio" and is it reliable? Answer: The term "Vintage" is like "aged" with cheese. It's not exactly new, but it's not "antique" either. Generally, you're talking about something that's 40 years old or more. If you buy it directly from a private individual or dealer, it's usually not reliable. It needs a major overhaul first. It's like a car that's been sitting in a barn for 40 years. It might still be nice and in good condition, but you shouldn't drive it until it's been checked in the garage! Remember that people often sell something if they suspect there will be expenses. Always assume that what you buy needs to be checked by us first and possibly improved. No problem, of course. But don't assume you're done with the price you pay on Marktplaats.

I also see 10-year-old equipment labeled "Vintage." Answer: Because the term "Vintage" is often used to indicate collectors' value, sellers sometimes try to inflate the value of a second-hand modern product. There are also younger products that are "sought-after," but these are usually very unique pieces that were once very expensive and of which only a few were made. If in doubt, don't buy it.

If it looks good, it's probably good. Many people buy "vintage" products for their looks. That's why these products are often targeted by dealers. Buy them, polish them a bit, and resell them. This doesn't say anything about their technical condition. Be careful! Equipment this old has often already been opened and handled by unskilled people. Check the screws. Are they missing? Are they damaged? And have equipment thoroughly demonstrated. Ask for a warranty and an invoice if you suspect you're dealing with a dealer (several ads, often appear on MP, etc.).

If I buy a (defective) device, are the parts still available? For electronics, (replacement) parts are often still available. However, there are exceptions. Some FETs and ICs are becoming increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to obtain. You often see devices being relisted as "defective" because a buyer thinks they're getting a good deal. If it turns out parts are no longer available, the device is sold to someone else. You've been warned! Cheap often turns out to be expensive.

Can I safely buy a record player/turntable on Marktplaats? In fact, a lot can be wrong with a record player, even if it appears to be working. Automatic record players are usually worn out and require servicing. If this hasn't been demonstrably done, keep these costs in mind. Every used turntable should be serviced. Even if it appears to be working, damage to the bearing, arm, or needle can occur during use. Prevention is better than cure, and it will sound better after a service. So you can buy it, but be aware that you'll still need to have it serviced. It's best to replace the needle/cartridge and possibly a belt.

Is a CD player easy to repair? If you buy a nice CD player that skips or has reading problems, a service can fix it. Keep in mind that the laser might be worn out and no longer available. Therefore, CD players are risky. Consider agreeing with the seller that you will make a final decision on the purchase after a service (paid for by you). This way, both parties know what to expect.

Is a used cassette deck or tape recorder reliable? These are products that are largely mechanical. They also contain electronics. We advise against buying these products "just because" if they cost a lot of money. They must be demonstrably serviced by a professional, or you should expect to incur these costs. And if parts are worn out, the costs can be high. Know what you're doing. Buy these products from specialty stores.

Is there anything I can do to save on service costs? A layman breaks more than we'd like. We see beautiful equipment every day that's been tampered with, sometimes beyond repair. And that's a shame. Don't try to fix it yourself. It increases costs and is also dangerous. If you want to save money, it's best to buy something that's guaranteed to be good. So, something new with a factory warranty or restored "vintage" audio equipment from a reliable supplier.

Would you like me to buy from Marktplaats? Some people like to take a gamble. This is usually motivated by a false (Dutch?) thriftiness. This often results in higher costs and disappointment down the road. However, if you believe that quality comes at a price, you can certainly buy something from Marktplaats and then have the equipment serviced by us. Negotiate well and don't let anyone tell you that a private individual or dealer has done it. No receipt, no proof! Then you'll have a good deal. Or buy from us. In that case, these costs are already included in the price.

    Where can I find HifiStereo.nl?

Where are you located? Please note: HifiStereo.nl is an online store . You're already standing in front of the window. Orders and contact are preferably placed through this online store! We also have a showroom in Alkmaar, located near the A9 highway in the Netherlands. If you'd like to drop off or pick up an item, appointments are available. You can also view some models. We are centrally located in Woerden, near Utrecht. The Chamber of Commerce (KVK) office address is: Marconiweg 6, 3442AD Woerden.

What's your phone number? The webshop is our gateway. If you want to tell us something, please do so electronically, using the contact form. Why? Our work includes demonstrating beautiful sound. Phone calls are very disruptive during this process. That's why we prefer emailing to calling. If you really can't figure it out using this website, you can request a call back. We're happy to advise you on a turntable or your entire system. However, calling about a belt is costly. In that case, emailing is preferable. Thank you for your understanding. We're happy to help.

Question: Why sign up/register? We consider anyone who signs up as a customer. You indicate that you're interested in what we do and that you might want to do business with us (in the future). You'll receive some benefits upfront. Forms on the website are automatically filled in. You can also post an article in the "wanted" section. You'll receive a preview of some "unique" devices. You'll have access to the "inside information" section. More pages may be added that are only visible to customers. You'll also regularly (but not annoyingly often) receive an extra benefit. And if you don't like it, you can always unsubscribe.

Question: How much does a service or repair cost? A service almost always costs €50 for a turntable. Of course, it's impossible to say exactly how much a repair will cost. Sometimes things go well, sometimes they don't. The cost consists of parts and time. It takes at least half an hour to open a device and roughly assess the problem. An exact assessment and repair usually takes at least 1-2 hours. This brings the average repair to €70-100. If it's less than that, we naturally charge less. We don't charge an investigation fee because when you offer a repair, you agree to a maximum of €120. Above that amount, we do ask for approval first. If it's less than that, you pay less, but we can continue working without calling or emailing. Question: Why don't you prefer cash payments/can you pay by card? An online store is digital. It's designed for everything to be electronic. Cash is difficult. You have to withdraw it from the bank to get change or return it after paying. And then all that administration for the bookkeeping. Moreover, the bank charges deposit fees. While it's all very easy to do via bank (iDeal) or credit card, and that's effortless. If you want to pick up, transfer the amount in advance; that's easy for everyone. If you really can't, there's an ATM (ING) nearby. Cash is also accepted if you have no other choice. We'll have a PIN machine soon. Question: Why are shipping costs different from TNT Post? We ship for free above 50 euros. Shipping costs for a business are considered 'inclusive of VAT,' but they are not deductible, meaning they are taxed as 'additional turnover' and essentially a loss for a company. In addition, there are packaging and handling costs, and the products are shipped by registered (and insured) mail. Therefore, we ask for a small additional fee for orders below 50 euros to cover these 'losses,' so we don't have to include these prices in the products. This applies entirely to letter mail. Then it's not just the shipping costs that we lose money on, but also the handling. For example, there's a very small margin on a string. The time you spend processing the order, purchasing, storage, administration, packaging, postage (on which you pay VAT and sales tax), and delivery doesn't outweigh the 'profit'. Question: How does the search function work? You can use the search function to search everything on www.HifiStereo.nl. So not just products, but also articles. You can combine any words. A list will automatically appear below the search bar showing everything related to the keywords. For example, if you're looking for a cable with DIN and jack, simply type: cable DIN jack. The list is very long after the first word; if you type the next, the list shortens, and after the third word, only the items that match all three words remain. For example, if you search for the word 'shopping mall', you'll automatically find these answers. Question: You also sell second-hand items, why should I buy them from you? We have our own technical service department. This means we can reliably supply (trade-in) vintage record players. When you buy from HifiStereo.nl, you're buying something that has been checked and serviced. You're not buying a pig in a poke and you can always return if there's a problem with the equipment. You'll pay a little more than on a second-hand site, but you'll get what you pay for. Question: Can I reserve an item? If you want to buy something and don't want to miss out but would like to wait a bit before picking it up and/or paying, you can reserve a product for a short period. We'll then agree on a date, visible to everyone, on which the product will be available again, unless you've made the payment. Question: Do you have a store? Answer: HifiStereo.nl is an online store, so it's open 24 hours a day. There's a showroom and a listening room in Woerden. Appointments can be made for listening or pickup. Larger items are stored elsewhere in a warehouse, so it's not possible to drop by spontaneously. The business address is an administrative office, not a storage facility.

Question: What payment methods are available? Answer: You can pay by bank transfer (iDeal), credit card, or cash. It may take a day for the amount to be credited by bank transfer. Cash payment is preferred for pickup. Please pay by debit card en route. Question: What is the delivery time? Answer: If the delivery time isn't stated with the item, it's usually in stock and will be shipped on the day or within a few days of receiving payment. If you pay by iDeal, this is usually the same day. In practice, this means delivery within 24 hours, but the delivery time may vary by bank. If you order custom-made items, for example, a specific cartridge for a record player that needs to be installed, we aim to deliver within approximately one week (including service). Question: Is there a warranty? Answer: If you buy a new item, the manufacturer's warranty applies. If you buy a vintage or second-hand device, there's no standard warranty, but we do! Devices that we've serviced at least once have a 30-day warranty. If a device develops a defect immediately after purchase, please contact us immediately and do not use or open the device. We are happy to assist you with any defects immediately after purchase. We look forward to welcoming you back as a customer. Question: Can I also listen to and collect the device? Answer: Yes, that is possible by appointment. Send an email to verkoop@HifiStereo.nl. Please include your name, telephone number, and the equipment you wish to listen to. You will then be called to schedule an appointment. The equipment you require will be set up so you can listen to it before purchasing. Question: What does the Margin Scheme mean? Answer: You pay VAT on new products, which is included in the price. A fiscal margin scheme applies to second-hand products, just like with a second-hand car. This means that HifiStereo.nl is liable for limited tax (which means the products are not significantly more expensive than if you buy from a private individual). Furthermore, no VAT deduction is possible on the purchase (for businesses). Question: Is a trade-in possible? Answer: We only do that to a very limited extent, only if we can easily justify the extra effort to service and sell it. In other words, the buyer gets very little in return, otherwise it's impossible.

What should you pay attention to when purchasing or refurbishing a record player?

What should you pay attention to when purchasing or refurbishing a record player?

Are you looking to buy a record player or have it refurbished? What's important, what should you consider, and how much will it cost? This article covers the most important points. If you have any questions after reading this, please don't hesitate to contact us.

    1. The budget

The turntable occupies a special place in any hi-fi system. If you play a lot of vinyl, a turntable can be quite expensive. Spending a little more on quality ensures years of enjoyment. Cheap often comes at a price, especially with record players. A bad or cheap needle can damage your records.

It's typically Dutch to aim for the lowest price, but that often leads to disappointment. If you give us a fair margin, you'll receive advice and service in return. So leave room in your budget for service and advice.

Important: allocate at least 50% of your budget to the cartridge. This is the foundation of the sound. A good cartridge can cost hundreds of euros, but it can easily last ten years and even improves in sound quality over time. Divide the price by the number of listening hours: the investment will then be more reasonable.

A nice turntable with a good cartridge costs an average of between €500 and €1000. Cheaper players require concessions. Above that, the sky's the limit. Be aware that some cheap new players can damage vinyl. If a complete player costs around €100, you know it can't be right.

    2. What do you want from a player?

There are many options to consider. Older brands like Thorens were once top-notch, but they truly shine with expensive cartridges and a high-end system. There are also affordable, modern players with useful features and excellent value.

    Important choices include:

    • Manual operation or (semi)automatic shut-off mechanism
    • Belt or direct drive
    • Strobe and pitch control
    • Dust cover or cloth as protection
    • Look and feel (modern, vintage or DJ style)

For purchases up to around €1000, we offer excellent players with a good price-performance ratio. If you'd like to go even further towards the high-end, we'd be happy to discuss it in person.

    3. Secondhand or new?

We offer both new and used record players. There's something to be said for both options.

New players often have a modern look, are ready to use immediately, and offer reliability. Think, for example, of models from Audio Technica, Thorens, or Dual.

Used players are often high-quality, but always require maintenance. Think of replacing a string, needle, cartridge, or cables. We've already inspected and serviced our vintage players. They can then be fitted with a cartridge or interconnect of your choice.

    4. The element

The cartridge is the most important link in the chain. It's where the sound is created. Therefore, the cartridge is a crucial part of the choice for every record player we supply. Double the price of the cartridge, and you have a good guideline for your total budget.

Those primarily focused on sound can also opt for good used players combined with a quality cartridge. Feel free to contact us for advice.

    5. Accessories and preamplifier

A good element requires the right accessories and connections. Consider:

    • Good quality interconnects
    • Record brush, needle brush and wet cleaner
    • Antistatic mat and covers for your records
    • Cleaning systems such as Knosti or Okki Nokki

In addition, a phono input or separate preamplifier is necessary to properly transmit the signal to the amplifier. If you have any questions, we're happy to advise you.

    Finally

Already know what you want? We're happy to help you make the right choice. Have any questions or would you like to schedule an appointment? Feel free to contact us.

My turntable isn't working properly, what can I check myself?

first aid for a turntable that is not working

Did you receive a turntable that's not working properly? Check the following points before contacting us. If the turntable hasn't been serviced in a while, it's best to schedule a service appointment right away. Trying to fix it yourself can often cause more damage than it solves.

Note: Always remove the needle or at least lower the protective cap before examining.

    turntable received from us

    • Remove all tape and ties that have been applied for transport.
    • Also check the back of the platter to see if there is any tape left.
    • Carefully rotate the platter and check if it moves freely.
    • Check if any transport screws are present.
    • check if the arm is secured in the clamp.

    readjust counterweight
If the counterweight shifted during transport, readjust it:

    • be careful not to damage the needle.
    • move the elevator down.
    • hold the arm and turn the counterweight until the arm goes down.
    • rotate back until the arm floats in balance.
    • put the arm back and lock it.
    • turn the black disk to zero.
    • Now turn both together to 1.5 – 2 grams depending on the element.

    turntable does nothing

    • check that the plug is in the socket.
    • Also check any extension cord.
    • Does the player have a start button? Try the stop button as well.
    • On some models the turntable starts when you gently move the arm towards the platter.
    • Do you hear the motor running but the platter isn't spinning? Then the belt is probably loose.

    platter not turning

    • Do you hear the engine or is a light on? Check the belt.
    • remove the rubber mat.
    • lift off the metal tray (pry gently if necessary).
    • Place the string back around the inner ring on the underside of the platter.
    • Replace the platter and pull the belt over the motor using a thin screwdriver.
    • test whether the platter rotates.

    engine not running

    • recheck that the belt and platter are positioned correctly.
    • Remove the platter and belt. Turn on the power and press the start button.
    • if necessary, move the arm to the center.
    • feel if the engine is running.
    • if not: please contact us.

    grinding noise

    • Check that all tape and shipping screws have been removed.
    • check that the string is positioned correctly.
    • turn the 33/45 rpm knob back and forth a few times.
    • Is the turntable level? This is essential.
    • If the sound only comes with an LP or mat on top, the suspension may need to be adjusted.

    turntable is not turning stably

    • check that the turntable is level.
    • check the needle pressure.
    • check if the plateau is straight.
    • is the string worn out?
    • With direct drive there may be an electronic problem.
    • service may be required.

    strobe not working properly

    • check that all other matters are in order.
    • If only the light doesn't come on, then a service call is required.
    • With belt drive, slight variation is normal.
    • With direct drive, constant variation is a reason for repair.

sound is very soft or absent

    • first set the volume to zero.
    • Check that the turntable is connected to the phono input of the amplifier.
    • If you don't have a phono input, use a separate phono preamplifier.
    • set the amplifier to the correct input.
    • Check whether you are using an MM or MC cartridge and whether the amplifier is set up for this.

    sound hums

    • Hum is often caused by incorrect grounding.
    • First connect only the tulip plugs without the earth wire.
    • If hum persists, connect a ground wire between the turntable and the amplifier.
    • If the hum persists in one channel, the interconnect may be defective.

other problems for which it is better to contact us

    • the arm slides over the record (needle broken).
    • the elevator doesn't go down.
    • the arm bounces over the plate.
    • the automatic return is not working.
    • the sound sounds bad or worse than CD/MP3.
    • there is volume loss in one channel.
What can I do about reverberation and poor acoustics in my room?

How do I improve the acoustics in my listening room or living room?

Every space suffers from reverberation, reflection, and sometimes even standing waves due to interference and frequency stacking. It's a complex matter.

Spending a lot of money on a high-end system and still not getting the best sound? This is often due to the room's acoustics. Especially in rooms with a lot of bare, hard walls, problems arise: direct sound reflection (flutter) and significant reverb. Furthermore, frequencies can reinforce or attenuate each other, creating unwanted effects. You might notice this because you only get good sound at low volumes, while at higher volumes, the bass dominates. You might also hear a distinct hum or flutter effect.

    the solution
By applying acoustic panels in strategic locations, you can significantly improve sound quality. In a living room, this can be visually disruptive, but attractive solutions are now available. At hifistereo.nl, you can order panels in various sizes, thicknesses, and colors.

The panels have a sturdy MDF frame and can be used along the wall, ceiling, or freestanding. They are available in standard colors, but you can also use your own fabrics upon request. You can also decorate them with painting, wallpaper, or embroidery. This way, you can use the panels not only functionally but also aesthetically.

You can even create creative designs with it, such as a Mondrian-style layout or wainscoting. Custom work is possible, and for larger projects, we're happy to visit you to offer advice and prepare a personalized quote.

    standard sizes (example):

    • 64 x 104 x 5 cm
    • 64 x 104 x 10 cm
    • 124 x 104 x 5 cm
    • 124 x 104 x 10 cm

The material is available in various absorption variants, for example d20/50 (20 kg/m² and 5 cm thick).

    colors to choose from:

    • white
    • black
    • blue
    • red
    • burgundy red
    • green
    • brown
    • light gray
    • dark gray
    • turquoise
    • beige (khaki)

    practical tip
Thin materials like carpet primarily absorb high-pitched sounds, while low-pitched sounds often cause the most noise. Therefore, thicker and heavier panels are often the best choice.

We are happy to help you find the right solution and answer all your questions about acoustic panels.
